Can your program accept new residents with prior Graduate Medical Education training? 
 Yes 

Will the program accept COMLEX scores in lieu of USMLE scores? 
Yes, we do accept COMLEX scores in place of USMLE scores. It is expected that applicants will have passed USMLE and COMLEX step 1 on their first attempt. 

Does the department instruct medical students and residents from other services?
Yes. Teaching and mentoring medical students are core values in the department. General surgery residents will rotate on other departments’ services for specialty care exposure. Residents from other departments will rotate on diverse services within the general surgery department. 

Residents have additional opportunities for exposure to research, rural practice, as well as an international rotation.

Do you have any fellows on service?
Yes. There are currently fellows on Trauma/Critical Care, Breast, Transplant and Vascular Surgery Service Lines.  

How many faculty members teach residents in this program? 
We currently have 43 faculty across 9 department divisions.  

Of the faculty above, how many are board certified in General Surgery?
All surgical teaching faculty are board certified 

How many hours per week are residents expected to attend regularly scheduled lectures/conferences? 
There are 3 departmental regularly scheduled conferences per week.  These are protected education time for the residents. Additionally, there are service specific conferences that the residents will be expected to attend while on those rotations. 

Does the program allow residents to moonlight? 
No 

How many overnight shifts do residents work during each 4-week block? 
We have a night call block schedule.  Residents will average 1-2 weekend call coverage a month when not on night call.  Those could be either a 24- or 12-hour shift.  

Does the program provide time off (in any year of the program) for residents to attend conferences or professional meetings?
 Yes. If the resident is presenting at the conference outside of their chief year, they can obtain preapproval to attend the conference. The resident may attend one conference without a paper presentation in their chief year.
