Educational Conferences

The Department of Surgery at the KU School of Medicine has taken a proactive approach to the education of our residents beyond just clinical training.

General Surgery Education

Resident/Faculty Core Lecture Series:

This weekly conference is dedicated to didactic teaching. The conferences meet every Thursday from 4-5 p.m. Lecture time is "protected," which means that every resident is relieved of their clinical duties for the duration of the teaching time. The lectures are assigned to divisions to lead with open discussion of material. A journal article on the topic is selected monthly for discussion and is followed by mock oral questions.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference:

This conference meets weekly on Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. M&M is attended by both resident staff and surgical attendings. During M&M, cases are discussed by the primary resident along with indications, complications and alternative treatments. The Core Competencies with respect to each case are discussed. There are also resident presentations given covering educational topics that arise during the conference or are assigned by staff.

General Surgery Grand Rounds:

A conference that meets on the 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th Tuesday mornings of the month from 7 to 8 a.m. Grand Rounds is a mix of guest lecturers, visiting professors, surgical faculty and resident lecturers.

GME Core Competency Conference Series:

The GME Core Competency Conference Series is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Office of the Graduate Medical Education and The University of Kansas Health System. Presentations are often case-based and audience participation is encouraged. The conference occurs on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (August through June).
