Benefits for the Resident in General Surgery
The department of surgery at the KU School of Medicine offers a competitive benefits plan for residents.
Health Insurance:
As employees of the State of Kansas, residents are eligible for state health insurance.
Parking:
Each resident is provided a parking permit on campus for covered, secure parking in Parking Garage 5.
Library:
The Department of Surgery pays for each resident's yearly library fees.
Courses:
The Department of Surgery pays for the following courses:
- Basic Life Support or BLS
- Advanced Burn Life Support or ABLS
- Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma or ASSET
- Advanced Trauma Life Support or ATLS
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support or ACLS
The department also pays for the following exams:
- Step 3 or COMLEX 3
- Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery or FES
- Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery or FLS
Loupes Allowance:
Residents receive up to $1,100 towards Loupes during their PGY 1 year.
Licensure:
The department pays for each resident's temporary license to practice medicine and DEA license in Kansas and Missouri.
Vacation:
Each resident receives three weeks of paid vacation each year.
PGY3 - 5's may reserve 1 week of vacation to be used as flex time. 1 2-day block and 1 3-day block.
Scrubs:
The Department of Surgery provides three lab coats with personalized embroidery to each resident at the beginning of their intern year. PGY 3s, and chiefs receive two lab coats. OR scrubs are available to surgery residents through ID badge access.
Book Allowance:
Each resident is provided a $250 book allowance annually for educational materials.
Subscriptions:
The department provides an annual subscription for each resident to SCORE and True Learn.
Membership:
Residents are provided memberships to The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and Association of Women Surgeons (AWS).
Trips:
During the chief year, the department will reimburse expenses up to $1,500 for each chief to attend a professional meeting of their choice. Pre-approval by the program director and chair is required.
At any time during residency, if a resident has a scientific paper accepted for presentation at a national meeting, the department will reimburse expenses upon approval from the program director and chair. There may be time-away restrictions and a monetary cap.
Meal Cards:
$30.00 bi-weekly meal allowances are provided to each resident.
