Dual-Trained Faculty

Christian Barrett, M.D.

Dr. Barrett completed his medical school training at MUSC in Charleston, SC where he found his passion for integrated care in IM/Psych. He matched into the program at KU and instantly fell in love with KC and its people, officially joining the faculty in 2025. His primary practice is in the ambulatory psychiatry clinic with an interest in incorporating psychotherapeutic principals and expanding collaborative services with our robust mental health team. He spends most of his free time attending music concerts, playing boardgames, and finding unique spots throughout the city.


William Gabriell portrait

Dr. Gabrielli obtained his medical degree and completed his Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency at the University of Kansas. Prior to medical school he received a PhD in Psychology from the University of Southern California and additionally completed a postdoctoral training program at the University of Colorado’s Institute for Behavioral Genetics and Department of Pharmacology. He has served as the Chair of Psychiatry at KU since 1996. Throughout his career he has been a principal investigator and consultant for numerous research projects and is an internationally recognized expert for his research on familial factors in addiction, alcoholism, and psychiatric disorders.


Laura Heckert portrait

Dr. Heckert graduated from Rush Medical College in 2015. She came to the University of Kansas Medical Center for the combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Residency Program, from which she graduated in 2020. She then accepted a position as faculty at KU and remained involved in the residency program. She stepped into the role of Program Director in 2024. Her clinical practice includes outpatient primary care, with a focus on patients with psychiatric comorbidities and disorders at the intersection of internal medicine and psychiatry. She also serves as the psychiatrist for KU’s Epilepsy Center and spends one day per week working on the psychiatry consult-liaison service. Outside of work, she enjoys gardening, visual arts, and spending time with her family.


Tyler Kjorvestad portrait

Dr. Kjorvestad completed his Internal Medicine / Psychiatry residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center. As an Assistant Clinical Professor in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at The University of Kansas Health Systems, Dr. Kjorvestad has dedicated his career to advancing the overlap of medical and psychiatric care and improving patient outcomes through both clinical practice and innovative research. His role extends to several key leadership positions, including Co-Medical Director of the Ambulatory Psychiatry Clinic, Director of Psychiatric Clinical Trials, and Director of the Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic. His research primarily focuses on the use of psychedelic substances for the treatment of psychiatric conditions, with a particular emphasis on treatment-resistant depression. He is committed to exploring and validating novel therapeutic approaches to provide better care for patients with complex mental health needs.


Teresa Long, M.D.

Dr. Long went to medical school at the University of Kansas before training in Internal Medicine/Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1989-1994.  In 1994 she returned to the University of Kansas as faculty where she became Program Director of the dual IM/Psych residency, a role she maintained until her retirement in 2024.  While at KU she championed the care of individuals with complex medical and psychiatric illness and those with chronic pain, and expanded and developed the Consultation/Liaison Service.  She remains involved with KU Psychiatry department as an Emeritus Professor.


Angela Mayorga portrait

Dr. Mayorga received her medical degree from Creighton University.  She completed the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Combined Residency Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.  After residency, she completed an Internal Medicine Chief Resident year.  She then joined the Psychiatry faculty where her first job was Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry. Currently, she is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, and her clinical work is Ambulatory Psychiatry.  She has been Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Program since 2013.  She is married and has two children.  She enjoys watching her children play sports, playing the piano and singing at church.


David Vernikov, M.D.

Dr. Vernikov has a BA in Russian Literature from Cornell University and an MA in Slavic Literature from UW Madison. He completed medical school at American University of the Caribbean and his Internal Medicine / Psychiatry residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center. His professional interests include consult-liaison psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, and transplant psychiatry. His personal interests include poker, skiing, sailing, and travel.


Kurt Wall portrait

Dr. Wall was raised in Iowa City and obtained his Medical Degree as well as a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2016. He then completed his Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency at Tulane University  where he served as Chief Resident. He arrived at KU in 2022 and currently serves as the Associate Program Director for the IM/Psych Residency Program. His clinical time is split among Consult/Liaison Psychiatry, outpatient Psychiatry, and Onco-Psychiatry.  In his free time, he enjoys hiking, gardening, and spending time with his family. He has two cats, Remy and Lua, who unfortunately do not get along.


Will Webb, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Webb earned his medical and doctoral degrees at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, where he studied the epigenetics of learning and memory. He currently serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine and Internal Medicine Chief at KUMC. His clinical and academic interests include clozapine use in schizophrenia, management of medical comorbidities in serious mental illness, and medical education. Outside of work, he enjoys gardening, electronic music, and reading about finance and philosophy.
