Psychiatry Clerkship - Pych 955

The psychiatry clerkship is an integral component of the curriculum at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Designed for third-year medical students, this four-week clinical block includes:

  • 2 weeks in inpatient psychiatry
  • 2 one-week experiences in a psychiatry subspecialty area

Our clerkship is offered 12 times a year and accommodates approximately 11 students at a time. Through this educational experience, students will gain basic exposure to core areas of clinical neuroscience, with some exposure to specialty areas, including:

  • Psychology
  • Neuropsychology
  • Addiction
  • Pain management

Under the close supervision of our faculty experts, students are guided in the evaluation and treatment of people with psychiatric disease processes in outpatient, consultative, emergency and inpatient settings. Students participate in several educational activities such as:

  • Scheduled didactic sessions
  • Regular practical sessions with faculty demonstrating psychiatric evaluations
  • Educational sessions involving case centered evaluations and discussions

We cover a wide range of psychiatric illnesses during our clerkship, including:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Thought disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Cognitive disorders
  • Dementia
  • Delirium
  • Substance abuse
  • Developmental disorders
  • Disorders of attention
  • Disruptive disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Factitious disorders
  • Somatoform disorders

In addition, students learn to interface with related disciplines and entities, such as:

  • Various medical, surgical and rehabilitation consultants
  • Social workers
  • Psychologists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Pharmacists
  • Physical therapists
  • Nurses
  • Police
  • The courts
  • Social service representatives
  • Community mental health case workers
