Faculty promotions announced
Four faculty members from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences earn promotions
Chancellor Girod has approved promotions for faculty members in the Department of Psychiatry and Behaviors Sciences effective July 1, 2024. This includes:
Angela Mayorga, M.D., to professor
Mitchell Douglass, M.D., to associate professor
Tyler Droege, Psy.D., to associate professor
Kelsey Sewell, Ph.D., to associate professor
Angela K. Mayorga, M.D., joined the psychiatry faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2007. She currently holds a joint appointment as associate professor of both psychiatry and internal medicine at the medical center and functions as residency director of the Psychiatry Residency Program and co-director of the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Residency Program. Her principal duties are educating residents and practicing psychiatry in the outpatient clinic. Mayorga received her M.D. from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She completed her residency in the combined internal medicine/psychiatry program at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Mitchell Douglass, M.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He earned his M.D. at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, and completed the University of Kentucky Triple Board. He served as the medical director of the Wyandot Center and is board certification in adult psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. In 2015, he joined the Department of Psychiatry as medical director of Marillac, the inpatient child psychiatry hospital for The University of Kansas Health System.
Tyler Droege, Psy.D., is the clinical director of Psychology Services at The University of Kansas Health System’s Marillac Campus and is an assistant professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the KU Medical Center. Droege also serves as the program director for the Clinical Child Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship program. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Texas Christian University and his Master of Arts and Doctor of Psychology in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He completed an APA-accredited internship at the Momentous Institute in Dallas, Texas, with a focus on child and adolescent psychology. Droege served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Momentous Institute and continued to serve this community for the next four years as a staff psychologist and assessment coordinator. He continued his work with children overseas with the Department of Defense.
Kelsey Sewell, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Neurology with the KU Medical Center. A faculty member since 2017, she supervises and trains psychiatry resident physicians, medical students and psychology trainees. She also provides assessment, psychotherapy, coordination of care and other support for patients receiving care at The University of Kansas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and the Parkinson's disease and Movement Disorder Center. Additionally, she conducts psychological evaluations for patients considered for deep brain stimulation (DBS), neurosurgery for epilepsy and focused ultrasound. Sewell earned a doctorate in clinical psychology with a health psychology and behavioral medicine specialization from the University of Utah. She completed a predoctoral internship in behavioral medicine at the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center in clinical health and onco-psychology. She has a Master of Science degree in clinical psychology from the University of Utah and a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and women's studies from the University of Kansas.
