The University of Kansas Health System has updated the Supporting Patients in a Tobacco Free Environment policy. Based on updated recommendations and the removal of the health warning label from the FDA, nursing staff are now asked to advise the patient to wear the nicotine patch even if they sign the smoking waiver and choose to smoke during their stay. This change reflects the evidence that wearing the patch reduces cravings to smoke and that the "concomitant use of Over The Counter Nicotine Replacement products with cigarettes or with other nicotine-containing products does not raise significant safety concerns".
