History of the KU School of Medicine Plastic Surgery Department
Plastic surgery at KU Medical Center grew from strong roots in reconstructive surgeries, particularly in burn, trauma, and complex wound management which has transformed into our current comprehensive Department of Plastic, Burn & Wound Surgery. With decades of multidisciplinary collaboration across various fields and specialties, the program formalized into a fully accredited residency that pairs high-volume clinical exposure with structured didactics, simulation, and research.
As national education models evolved, so did KU Plastic Surgery — adding an integrated six‑year residency pathway which recruits residents into plastic surgery while preserving graded responsibility and broad surgical foundations. Today, our residents train across the full continuum of microsurgery, hand and upper extremity, craniofacial/pediatric, breast and oncologic reconstruction, burn, trauma, limb salvage, and aesthetics — with elective time to cater to their goals and interests.
