The Cancer Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center offers advanced, multidisciplinary training in one of the fastest-growing subspecialties in physiatry. In partnership with the University of Kansas Cancer Center—the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center in the region—this fellowship provides unparalleled opportunities to combine oncology rehabilitation training with access to cutting-edge cancer research and comprehensive patient care.
This one-year cancer rehabilitation fellowship program is designed for physicians who have completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and seek advanced expertise in the diagnosis and management of neurological and musculoskeletal impairments related to cancer and its treatments. Fellows gain specialized skills in evaluating and treating cancer patients and survivors facing residual complications from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and stem cell transplantation, as well as impairments caused by the cancer itself.
Training extends beyond cancer-related disabilities to encompass broader rehabilitation and musculoskeletal conditions that influence quality of life and tolerance of ongoing therapies. Fellows also benefit from additional rotations in palliative care, pediatric oncology rehabilitation, pain management, and elective experiences in oncology subspecialties such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, oncology psychology and more.
While the primary emphasis of the fellowship is clinical training, there are robust opportunities for cancer rehabilitation research, supported by mentorship, protected time, and departmental infrastructure. Fellows also engage in teaching at both the departmental and institutional levels, positioning graduates of the KU Cancer Rehabilitation Fellowship to become leaders in advancing the field of cancer rehab medicine.
