Parents as Teachers
KU Pediatrics collaborates with all the Parents as Teachers (PAT) Programs in Kansas and Missouri. Within Kansas, we partner with local school districts such as Shawnee Mission, Kansas City, Olathe, Lawrence, and Leavenworth School Districts. On the Missouri side, we have partnerships with the Kansas City Public Schools, Center School District, and Hickman Mills, and continue to expand our partnership reach.
We help families connect with their local PAT program. Those programs can help families:
- Identify strengths and concerns of the child and family
- Enhance parents' understanding of their child's development
- Monitor the child's growth and development
- Promote "goodness of fit" between the child's behavior and parental expectations.
- Assist in referrals to community resources
- Build a supportive alliance with family
For children with developmental disabilities, we partner with Early Intervention Agencies, such as Tiny-K Alliance, for patients on the Kansas side. For those children on the Missouri side, we partner with Missouri First Steps.
At the age of three, we assist families in contacting their local school district to request early childhood screenings for Part B services.
