Parent/Family Training
KU Medical Center Pediatrics believes education and training is important to the support of individuals with developmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder and Fragile X Syndrome. We provide workshops and training to teach skills that are evidence-based in order to improve outcomes for individuals with developmental disorders.
Children, adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities often require more medical, mental health, educational and family support services than their same age peers. Many parents report that it is hard to find and coordinate adequate services for their children.
Family Resource Specialists partner with families to identify the needs of the child and family to link them to information and resources.
The family support specialist will talk with the family to identify their needs and develop a care coordination plan. The Care Coordination plan will help the family access resources in their communities such as government supports, therapists, behaviorists, and future needs.

Kansas LEND offers monthly sessions (excluding July and December) on topics that are relevant to every day lives in the families of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the lifespan.
Sessions are in the evening, virtual, and archived on the Kansas LEND YouTube page. Topics have ranged from marriage, employment, self-advocacy to self-care and siblings.
May 15th: Kansas Employment First: Rethinking What’s Possible with Disability Employment, Inclusion, and Independence presented by Craig Knutson from Kansas University Center on Disabilities at The University of Kansas.
This presentation will examine the positive, life changing impact of competitive, integrated employment (CIE) on youth with disabilities. Participants will obtain an understanding of ways that families can support students with disabilities to prepare for employment, supports in the community that are available to obtain CIE, and dispel some of the myths that surround CIE such as the loss of benefits if a person obtains CIE.
