The Cytogenetics Laboratory is the oldest genetics diagnostic laboratory associated with The University of Kansas Medical Center and The University of Kansas Health System. It started in the 1960’s with a few hundred cases per year in about a 100 sq. ft of lab space, and only one to two-membered staff. This laboratory has grown significantly since then with ~5,000 specimens/ ~10,000 tests per year in ~6,000 sq. ft of lab space. The staff now numbers nearly twenty. We are located at the Southlake Campus, Lenexa, KS in a brand-new lab with state-of-the-art equipment with automation of wet lab processing and semi-automated imaging analysis.

The Cytogenetics Laboratory offers expert genetic interpretation of constitutional (blood; products of conception) and cancer-related (bone marrow; bone core biopsies; formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues/tumors) specimens. The goal is to provide high-quality and timely results to clinicians and pathologists to attain the most accurate diagnosis and prognosis possible, which enables better patient care.

The laboratory also provides training to pathology residents, hematopathology fellows, and oncology fellows. The goal of the rotation in the Cytogenetics Laboratory is to become competent in the interpretation of basic chromosome abnormalities, and to learn consultative skills that aid the clinician in the diagnosis of chromosomal syndromes
