Rhinology & Skull Base Surgery Fellowship
Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery fellows learn medical management of sinonasal disease and otolaryngic allergy practice via experience in outpatient clinics.
A major focus of the division is in clinical research. The fellow will be expected to play an important role on our research team. Our research team meets weekly and on average has 6-10 projects going at one time, including multi-institutional clinical trials, prospective, database, health informatics, and leadership and education studies.
Fellows will be expected to present and publish at national meetings in preparation for a career in academic medicine. As time permits, the rhinology fellow will also have working exposure to the maxillofacial trauma, which will enable the fellow to learn and/or perfect open approaches to the frontal and maxillary sinus.
Clinical Rotations
The fellow will work with Drs. Chiu, Villwock and Beahm in the operating room and clinics at both the main hospital for the University of Kansas (KU) as well as at other satellite outpatient surgery centers. Fellows will learn the practice of allergy by exposure to the otolaryngic allergy practice at KU under the guidance of Jennifer Villwock, MD.
Weekly Schedule
While the weekly schedule may fluctuate depending on the clinical opportunities available, in general the fellow will spend 2-3 days in the operating room and 1-2 days in the clinic. In addition there will be one day a week of protected time for research/paper writing or lab dissection experience. The fellow will be expected to function as a clinical instructor and help teach our Otolaryngology Residents.
Call Responsibilities
The fellow is appointed as a clinical instructor and will take faculty call. The department has over 20 clinical faculty and call responsibilities are on average 3 weeks a year.
