The Harrington Laboratory for Molecular Orthopedics, directed by Dr. Jinxi Wang, was established in 2005. The name of this laboratory is in honor of Dr. Paul. R. Harrington's outstanding contributions to orthopedic research and in accordance with his wishes in the gift letter of the Mary Alice & Paul R. Harrington, MD, Distinguished Professorship Endowment. This comprehensive laboratory consists of the following four research sections:

  1. Molecular and Cell Biology
  2. Histology
  3. Biochemistry
  4. In vivo Animal Studies

The Laboratory occupies 2860 sq ft of laboratory and office space in the Smith East Building, accommodating the four research sections with relatively separate lab space for each section. Researchers in this laboratory study the regulatory mechanisms by which multipotent mesenchymal stem cells differentiate into osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), chondrocytes (cartilage-forming cells), or skeletal muscle cells. We also investigate the roles of specific signaling pathways (e.g. NFAT, integrin, and Wnt signaling pathways) in skeletal diseases and bone/cartilage regeneration. Our current projects are mainly focusing on the following research areas: (1) regulatory mechanisms of osteoblast differentiation and bone regeneration, (2) pathogenic mechanisms and novel therapeutics for osteoarthritis, and (3) molecular regulation of chondrocyte differentiation/function and articular cartilage regeneration.
