Application and Interview Information

University of KS Eye Center Faculty and Residents

Applying

Registration with the SF Matching Program, which is sponsored by the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology (AUPO) and supported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is the first step in applying for an ophthalmology residency program. The Central Application Service (CAS) processes all applications and you will receive instructions for using CAS after applying to the SF Match in ophthalmology.

We offer a Joint Internship with our Department of Internal Medicine. You will be required to register through ERAS for the internship, but you will not need to interview separately with Internal Medicine, if you match with us in ophthalmology.

Deadlines

Due to the annual January match, ophthalmology is considered an "early match" specialty, so the decision to pursue this career path must be made earlier than most specialties. Though the deadline to submit your application is September 15, 2021, candidates are encouraged to complete and submit their applications by the end of August in their fourth year of medical school.

This year, we will be holding virtual interviews on the following afternoons: Friday, Nov. 5; Friday, Nov. 19th and Friday, Dec. 3rd. Scheduling will be available through the SF Match's Interview Scheduler. We will be holding two virtual open houses on August 23rd and September 13th, both at 7 p.m. Central Standard Time via Zoom.  Check back here for details!

Interviews

All interviews will be virtual this year. We very much will miss meeting our applicants in person and hope to recreate as much of the typical in-person experience as possible.

During our virtual interview sessions, you will be greeted by our residents, who will give a presentation on the following:

  • Faculty
  • Residents
  • Specific information for each PGY rotation, call schedule and consult service
  • Lectures & Conferences, including local, regional and national ophthalmology meetings
  • Benefits
  • University of Kansas Hospital Specialty Surgery and the University of Kansas Hospital

You will interview with a broad representation of our faculty and also have plenty of time to chat with the residents and ask questions.

Applicants would also tour the University of Kansas Eye Center, including our Ambulatory Surgery Center, and visit our off-site locations of Children's Mercy Hospital and the Kansas City Veterans' Hospital. The afternoon concludes with a casual social gathering at the home of a faculty member. We hope to resume this more personal style of interviews in 2022!
