Training Information

Interested in a neurology clerkship at KU Medical Center? Explore the educational opportunities we offer during the clerkship experience.

Our 4-week dedicated Neurology clerkship is part of the third-year curriculum at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. We offer this exceptional educational opportunity 12 times each year.

Clinical sites

KU Medical Center partners with hospitals and clinics across the state of Kansas. Our Kansas City campus shares a campus with The University of Kansas Health System. Faculty physicians provide inpatient and outpatient care and serve as staff members at the health system, giving our students the opportunities for clinical experience.

Students will be assigned to one of the clinical sites, and they will participate in Neurology outpatient clinics under the close supervision of our faculty, where they will be responsible for patient evaluation, examination and diagnostic synthesis.

Educational opportunities

During the clerkship, our students learn how to perform neurologic and funduscopic examinations. This general Neurology educational experience will be enhanced by other activities.

Lectures
Our faculty and residents also will share their expertise during in-depth lectures on a variety of topics, including:

  • Neurologic emergencies
  • Localization
  • Movement Disorders
  • Neuromuscular
  • Neuroimmunology
  • Epilepsy
  • Headache
  • Stroke
  • Common diagnostic tests in neurology

Grand Rounds
Students participating in the clerkship also are required to attend the department's weekly Grand Rounds lecture series, which features faculty in the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery discussing new and evolving trends in their fields.
