Vernita D. Hairston, M.D., retires in December

Vernita D. Hairston, M.D., retires after a decade of teaching and healing at the University of Kansas Medical Center

We wish Vernita D. Hairston, M.D., all the best as she begins her retirement. Dr. Hairston joined the faculty in the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2013. She retires in December as a clinical assistant professor.

Her esteemed career began when she earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She received a medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore and completed a residency in neurology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, she finished fellowships in neuromuscular medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and in neurorehabilitation at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Hairston is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with a subcertification in spinal cord injury medicine.

"During her time at the University of Kansas Medical Center Dr. Hairston was a caring and hard-working neurologist who contributed greatly to the success of our clinical and teaching missions," said Gary Gronseth, MD, FAAN, professor and chair, the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. "She will be missed by her colleagues and patients. We wish her success in her future endeavors."
