The future of health begins with YOU
What is the All of Us Research Program?
The All of Us Research Program is a large research program from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goal is to help researchers understand more about why people get sick or stay healthy.
We’re all human, but we’re not all the same. Often our differences — like age, ethnicity, lifestyle habits or where we live — can reveal important insights about our health. That’s why we’re asking one million or more people — like you — to join. Researchers will use this information to do studies that may help improve health for everyone.
What is KU Medical Center’s role?
KU Medical Center is proud to bring All of Us to the Midwest. As the coordinating site for the All of Us Research Program – Heartland Consortium, we are partnering with The University of Kansas Health System, the University of Missouri, University of Iowa Health Care and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. We aim to ensure that people from all walks of life in the heart of the country take part in the program. Together, with consortiums across the U.S. and its territories, we're building the most diverse health research resource to better understand how genetics, lifestyle, and the environment impact our health.
Be an All of Us participant
How to join
Program participants are partners in research. When you enroll, you are not just sharing your health information in a secure network for researchers. You can also get health information that matters to you.
To start your journey, go to Participant.JoinAllofUs.org and:
- Create an account
- Give your consent
- Agree to share your electronic health records
- Answer health surveys
- Have your measurements taken (height, weight, blood pressure, etc.) and give blood and urine samples, if asked
After completing these steps, you’ll receive a $25 gift card. To learn more about what participants receive, visit www.joinallofus.org/what-participants-receive.
Who will have access to my answers?
All of Us protects survey responses the same way we protect other information you share with us. Your answers will be added to the Data Browser in the All of Us Research Hub. Researchers can use the data for many different studies. Before we add your answers, All of Us removes any information that can identify you. This means that your name, date of birth, address and other identifying information are not available to researchers.
As a participant, you can view some of the data that other participants have contributed, like how your survey answers compare to other participants nationwide.
Keeping your data safe
Your privacy and data security are very important to us. Information collected by the program will be stored on protected computers. Laws are in place to protect research participants. When you join the program, these laws protect you. All of Us uses the best data protection systems available, and does not share data with other federal agencies. This includes law enforcement and immigration agencies. Read more about our privacy safeguards at www.joinallofus.org/privacy-safeguards.
The All of Us Research Program is working to enroll at least one million people who reflect the diversity of the United States. By sharing their health information with us, All of Us participants are helping us build one of the largest, richest, and most diverse biomedical datasets ever. It combines biological factors, genomics, and social determinants on a large, inclusive scale, capturing a wide variety of data types
The All of Us dataset is stored on the Researcher Workbench, a secure, cloud-based platform. The program offers tiered access to the data. Researchers’ institutions must first have agreements in place with All of Us before they can register to use the Researcher Workbench’s Registered and Controlled Tiers. These two tiers are separate from the Public Tier (a dataset available to visitors at ResearchAllofUs.org.)
Researchers can access All of Us participant data. Those researchers may work for universities, medical centers, or nonprofits. Everyone who uses All of Us data for research has to follow the same rules. They must agree to protect the privacy of participants. We require researchers to describe their research projects and how they will use the data on www.researchallofus.org and www.allofus.nih.gov. We share descriptions of all research underway.
Register for access at ResearchAllofUs.org.
KU Medical Center researchers can visit the All of Us Research Program page myKUMC intranet for more information (login required).
