American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Research Pathway
KU Internal Medicine
The ABIM Research Pathway is an integrated program that combines training in clinical internal medicine (residency) and its subspecialties (fellowship) with training in research. This pathway is for residents who intend to pursue a career in basic science, translational, or clinical research. The program is a Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) and offers mentored research experience during residency and fellowship years to provide cutting edge research opportunities to grow into an independent researcher.
ABIM Research Pathway residents receive clinical training in internal medicine in PGY-1 and PGY-2 and transition to a combined fellowship (if applicable) and research training in the beginning of PGY-3. They are guided by a mentoring team of experienced and culturally competent dedicated faculty for research mentorship, coaching, and career development. The mentoring team is built to suit the research interest and career plan of the individual candidate. The duration of the total training period is dependent on the internal medicine subspeciality. Three years of research training at 80 percent commitment is required in the ABIM Research Pathway. The final year of research pathway can be completed as a full-time faculty position as long as the commitment to mentored research is maintained at 80 percent.
For detailed information on the Research Pathway Policies and Requirements, visit the ABIM website: Research Pathway Policies and Requirements.
Mission
The mission of the University of Kansas Internal Medicine ABIM Research Pathway is to provide training and mentorship to residents who are committed to a career in basic science, translational research, or clinical research in academic medicine.
Our ABIM Research Pathway program is a Physician Scientist Training Program, where residents continue to get support from the Internal Medicine Residency Program even after the completion of their PGY2 training (formal completion of their internal medicine clinical training).
The Department of Medicine is strongly committed to the training and career development of physician-scientists through the ABIM Research Pathway, and we will facilitate their combined clinical and research training. Residents will attain biomedical knowledge and acquire skills to grow towards becoming an independent physician-scientist.
The Department of Medicine supports local and regional grant awards and faculty development opportunities for continuing research after the training.
How to apply
Applicants interested in the research pathway should check the "Research" box on the ERAS application as this will allow us to customize your interview process with our team.
Current resident physicians are also welcomed to communicate interest in pursuing the ABIM Research Pathway as they proceed through residency training even if they did not plan for this pathway upon application to residency. It is strongly recommended to let the Medical Education Leadership Team know of your interest in the ABIM pathway in your first year of residency, if possible, so that the necessary arrangements can be made to ensure a smooth transition from the standard three-year internal medicine training to the ABIM Research Pathway.
