Each PCCM fellow is assigned a didactic month for the year in which they develop the weekly curriculum for their assigned topic. This typically involves a core lecture by the fellow, Journal Club, a core lecture by their faculty mentor, and a lecture by a faculty member from another department.

Pulmonary and Critical Care Case Conference - Thursday Afternoons

The PCCM fellow will be assigned several conferences throughout the year in which to discuss pulmonary and critical care cases, which have timely educational value. These will consist of a short case presentation and discussion on the pertinent learning points of the case or diagnosis.

Veterans Hospital Surgical/Medical Chest Conference

The PCCM fellow on the VA Consult service presents various active pulmonary cases of surgical/oncological interest, especially lung cancer at the weekly VA Chest Conference on Wednesday mornings.

Patient Safety Conference

There are two patient safety conferences (PSC). Internal Medicine has PSC on the last Tuesday of the month in the Sudler Conference Room. There is a quarterly pulmonary safety conference on Thursday afternoon. Each 3rd-year fellow will be responsible for one conference during the year under the guidance of the Program director.

Multidisciplinary Chest Tumor Conferences

The KU Chest Tumor Conference is held on Thursday mornings in the Radiation Oncology Department at KUMC. Attendees include pulmonary, thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and pulmonary radiologists. In this conference, various physicians present cases of interest that are discussed in a multi-disciplinary fashion, with plans for further diagnosis and care established.

This is an active learning conference in which the fellows review US images with the Director of Point of Care Ultrasound. Additional topics to enhance bedside ultrasound by the fellows is also discussed in this conference.
