Study Details

Eligible participants will attend three in-person visits over a 12-week period at the University of Kansas Medical Center. At the first visit (approximately 60-90 minutes), parents will complete consent forms and questionnaires and have their child’s height and weight measured, like a doctor’s visit. The child will also complete cognitive and motor skill tasks and be fitted with a wearable device (like a pedometer) to track physical activity and sleep. Follow-up visits will include additional questionnaires and assessments.

Participants will be randomized into two groups. Half of the families will receive access to the Shining Star mobile app at the initial visit, while the other half will receive access after the 12-week study period. A study staff member will assist with downloading the mobile app onto the parent’s phone at the appropriate time and provide a tutorial on how to use it.
