At the University of Kansas, we place strong emphasis on clinical education, resident autonomy, work-life balance and our core value of patient care. Through clinical experience, mentorship support and educational resources each resident will reach his/her personal goals and full potential. At graduation, our residents excel as superior diagnosticians and as compassionate providers.

Our residents train extensively in General, Pediatric, Surgical, and Cosmetic Dermatology and practice under renowned practitioners at distinguished settings including The University of Kansas Hospital, Children's Mercy Hospital, and the Kansas City VA Medical Center - receiving exposure to patients with a wide variety of complex clinical diagnoses.

The Children's Mercy Hospital (CMH) faculty includes four pediatric dermatologists, all of whom are board certified in pediatrics and/or dermatology, and three of whom are trained in both sub-specialties as well as board certified in pediatric dermatology.

The CMH faculty are actively involved in several clinical research endeavors and welcome resident and medical student participation. Several division members are co-founders of the Hemangioma Investigator Group, which collaborates on numerous clinical studies focusing on infantile hemangiomas. CMH offers experience in procedural pediatric dermatology, including surgical excisions and laser therapies.

As a renowned referral center, CMH boasts a specialized multidisciplinary approach with entire clinics dedicated to complex diagnoses ranging from vascular malformations to neurofibromatosis. Lastly, CMH offers a pediatric dermatology fellowship program approved by the American Board of Dermatology.

Our residents also volunteer at the Dermatology Clinic at KC Care Health Center for underserved and uninsured individuals in our community. This clinic offers a unique opportunity for residents to give back to our community and make a huge difference in the lives of patients who may otherwise be denied care.

At the free clinic, residents provide all aspects of dermatologic care from surgical excisions to complex medical management of severe psoriasis with biologic therapy. Through an in-house 340B pharmacy, we can obtain most dermatologic medications at little or no cost to the patient.

Continuing Learning Opportunities

Residents are allotted adequate time off from clinic dedicated to resident-led group didactic sessions with a wide variety of faculty guest lectures. Residents are also granted multiple half days per month for individualized board preparation and research.

Our residents are well-trained in dermatopathology with weekly lectures from one of the top dermatopathologists in the nation. The vast hands-on training our residents receive, combined with time allotted for board preparation, guarantees that our residents are not only prepared for board examination, but also for a successful career. This is further evidenced by our 100% board exam pass rate.

The rigorous clinical and surgical experience at KU is balanced by our emphasis on resident wellness. We pride ourselves on fostering a friendly and fun work environment where residents feel comfortable learning and laughing with their peers and attendings.

"What stood out most to me during my time at KU Dermatology was the welcoming and friendly nature of the attendings and the other dermatology residents. Some of the best times of my life were spent during my time there, which I suspect not many residents from other programs can say. I would highly recommend our program to any prospective resident based on the camaraderie alone, not to mention many of the other positive attributes of KU Dermatology."
