The curriculum for our allergy and immunology fellowship offers broad exposure to both basic and complex allergy and immunology diseases as well as training in a variety of different therapies and treatments.
Our patient base is very conducive to broad exposures in both basic and complex allergy and immunology diseases. Our fellows are prepared to care for severe asthma, atopic and contact dermatitis, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, venom allergy, anaphylaxis, mast cell disease, food allergy, drug allergy, immune deficiency and urticarial/angioedema.
By working closely with Rheumatology, our fellows have exposure to patients with common and rare autoimmune conditions as well. This assures that they have exceptional training in a variable range of allergic and immunologic disorders.
Our program guides training so graduates will be very familiar with the principles and practice of diagnostic allergy testing and therapies. In addition, they gain the knowledge needed to prescribe and prepare allergen extracts for immunotherapy.
During the two years with our department, fellows spend a variable amount of time in pediatric and adult clinics as they broaden their knowledge base. They also have the opportunity to see patients in our outpatient infusion clinic as well as our inpatient consultative service that covers the entire hospital. Inpatient consults generally consist of drug allergy and desensitization, angioedema, eosinophilia, asthma, food allergy, and other rare disorders.
Fellows are currently on call from home on a month-long basis with others offering weekend coverage. There is a faculty member on call 24 hours a day who is there for support and will see all inpatient consults with the fellow.
Evaluations are performed on a bi-annual basis.
Patient volumes tend to vary but run between 4-10 inpatient consults per week and 4-6 outpatient visits per half-day of clinic. Clinics will consist of both pediatric and adult patients of all ages.
