Welcome to the Internal Medicine Sub-Internship experience at the University of Kansas School of Medicine! This is an exciting time in your medical career. There is a significant transformation when transitioning from a medical student to an intern. The sub-internship is often viewed as one of the most important clinical experiences to help prepare medical students for intern year. You will gain valuable autonomy, which will enable you to establish the foundation for your future practice and make relationships that will last beyond your training.
During the experience, students rotate on one of our inpatient hospitalist services at The University of Kansas Health System. You will be exposed to numerous complex medical cases in a diverse population within a tertiary medical center environment. You will either be working directly with an attending physician or a senior internal medicine resident and attending physician. Although you will be supervised, you are expected to be the first person to evaluate your patients and develop assessments and plans. You will be an integral part of the team, working directly with nurses, pharmacists, social workers, therapists, consultants and other providers. This rotation will provide an opportunity to function at the level of an intern with close one-on-one attending supervision and interaction. You will be involved in all aspects of your hospitalized patients' care — from initial presentation and work-up to discharge and follow-up planning.
I look forward to you rotating in our sub-internship rotation and helping facilitate this next step in becoming a physician. I wish you the most rewarding experience during your rotation!
