Residents as Teachers

Internal Medicine residents are students and teachers. Why? Because at KU, we recognize the value of expanding medical education opportunities to our residents.

University of Kansas, Internal Medicine Residency Program

At KU we greatly value the importance of self-directed learning, but also recognize that teaching others is vital to medical education and self-improvement. Both the hospital and the Internal Medicine Program have been expanding medical education opportunities and resources for residents to become better educators and physicians.

Resident as Teachers Friday School
Rotating curriculum to provide interactive workshop for developing teaching skills including teaching tools (1 minute preceptor), provided feedback, and leadership development with providing others autonomy.

Teaching on Clinical Rotations
Afternoon informal small group discussions on high yield topics for residents and medical students offered by senior residents. Our senior residents to take the lead on providing interactive teaching sessions to their teams.

University sponsored GME Workshop "Residents as Teachers"
This yearly workshop, which is held in early August, allows PGY-2 residents from multiple specialties to come together and discuss the transition from an intern to a supervising resident role. The goal is to encourage and facilitate the development of professional and competent residents as teachers.

JayDoc Free Clinic
Many of our senior residents choose to volunteer as preceptors at the medical school's JayDoc Free Clinic, a student-run non-emergency urgent care clinic located near the hospital. Volunteering at JayDoc allows our residents to step into an "attending role" and work with medical students one-on-one to provide much needed health care in Wyandotte County.

GME Residents as Teachers Scholars Program
The Residents as Teachers Scholar Series is a GME run program that focuses on trainees with a passion for teaching and those interested in pursuing an academic career following training. The program consists of 6 workshops that cover topics related to medical education. Participants also complete a teaching project demonstrating the teaching skills acquired through the series while getting feedback from faculty mentors.
