Recruitment Process

Interested in joining our Internal Medicine team? Learn about the application and recruitment process for residents:

Dear Applicants,

We send out a first batch of interview invitations early to mid-October.  We will continue to send out invites each week through November until interview positions are filled.  If interview positions open up due to cancellations, we will extend additional interview offers throughout our interview season.  We will not invite more applicants than we have interview slots.  Our review of applications is a slow and methodical process.  There is not a correlation between timing of receipt of an interview offer and our desire to meet you; instead, this is a reflection of our structured process of organization that allows multiple reviewers to review many applications.  We appreciate your patience!

-Leigh M. Eck, MD

Positions

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas Health System offers 23 categorical positions and 14 preliminary year positions each year.  In order to fill our preliminary year positions, we work closely with advanced programs in dermatology, ophthalmology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiation-oncology, radiology and interventional radiology.  In addition, we offer preliminary year position(s) untethered to a specific destination program.

Program Eligibility Requirements

Current senior or graduate from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOACOCA); or, graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:

(1) holding a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment

(2) holding a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States licensing jurisdiction in which the ACGME-accredited program is located

International medical graduates are sponsored primarily on J-1 visas.  On a case by case basis, we will consider H1B visa sponsorship. Note consideration of H-1B sponsorship is limited to individuals who have passed Steps 1, 2 and 3 of the USMLE by Match Day.

All appointments for residency are subject to ability to obtain an unrestricted Kansas medical license.

Application Process

Our program receives applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS). Applicants will be required to complete the MyERAS application.  The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted by November 30th.

To apply to the program, visit the ERAS website. All applications must include:

  • MyERAS application
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical School Transcripts
  • Letters of Recommendation - at least 3
  • Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE or "Dean's Letter")
  • USMLE transcripts and/or COMLEX-USA transcripts

An Internal Medicine Chair or Departmental letter is optional.

Our program will participate in program signaling.  We will utilize signals as one of many data points in deciding whom to invite to interview.

All appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates must register through the NRMP website.   Personal interviews are by invitation only and are based on the applicant's academic performance, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores and/or COMLEX-USA scores, letters of recommendation and other accomplishments as detailed in the ERAS application.  Interviews are conducted on selected dates from October through January. If selected for an interview, applicants will be notified by email. We are unable to provide applicants with a status report regarding their application or selection for interview.

Applicants should complete USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK exams (or equivalent COMLEX exams) and release their scores to ensure that we can view the results of these exams before the NRMP rank list deadline in mid-February.

Interview Process

We interview ~240 applicants for our 23 categorical positions. Interviews will be offered in a virtual environment for the 2024-2025 recruitment season. Except in infrequent circumstances, all invitations for interviews will be offered by December 1st.

Our GME office will offer "Site Visit Days" throughout recruitment season to those that we have invited to interview. These are optional and carry no connection to your interview with Internal Medicine.

Throughout recruitment season, our program coordinator will email with happenings within our program, KUMC and Kansas City. You have no obligation to reply or take any action to these emails. These are simply a way for you to get a sense of the culture we promote.

Given our partnership with advanced destination programs for our preliminary year positions, we do not interview for our preliminary year positions. Instead, we utilize interview data gathered from our partner destination programs.

Matched Student Characteristics

With each match cycle, we aim to recruit resident physicians that have a strong aptitude, engaging personality, effective communication skills, focused work ethic and growth-oriented mindset. We recognize that our team is strengthened by its inclusive excellence.
