Regulations for Use of Materials

  1. All researchers using the Clendening History of Medicine Library materials must complete the "Researcher Registration Form" and sign a statement agreeing to abide by the Regulations for Use of Materials. The form must be renewed annually.
  2. All researchers must present personal photographic identification (KUMC ID, driver's license, etc.) at the time of registration.
  3. No outer coats, briefcases, purses, backpacks, bags, binders, folders, or other bulky items are permitted in the Reading Room(s). Lockers are provided for secure storage of such items.
  4. Researchers are required to use notepaper supplied by the Library. No pens of any sort may be used. The Library will provide pencils for those who need them.
  5. Tape recorders, computers and other electronic research aids are permitted provided that other researchers are not disturbed. Library staff will examine the equipment before allowing it into the Reading Room(s).
  6. Researchers who need access to regular holdings will be permitted one archival box or two books at a time. Rare materials are more tightly controlled. By signing this document, all researchers agree to respect all controls and restrictions. All original materials must be handled with great care and rest on the table or in the cradle provided at all times. Do not place notepaper on books or manuscripts when taking notes. No tracings or rubbings of any kind may be made nor marks of any kind made in or erased from any materials. Unopened pages in books should be called to the attention of the Library staff; researchers are not permitted to open such pages.
  7. Permission to photocopy, photograph, or scan material will be given at the discretion of the Rare Book Librarian. Unless the material requires special handling, researchers may perform their own photocopying. Photocopying cost is ten cents per page.
  8. Upon leaving, return all books, notebooks, and other material to the Rare Book Librarian for inspection.
  9. Food and drink are not allowed in the Library.
  10. Publication of photographs, entire manuscripts, or unpublished materials requires written permission from the Rare Book Librarian, Clendening History of Medicine Library, Kansas University Medical Center, MS 1024 - 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160.
