Research, Teaching and Service

I enjoy searching the literature as I answer questions for patrons, facilitate their historical research projects, and create library exhibits or displays for special events or specific classes. Educating visitors touring the library is energizing whether they're students, adults, International guests, or visiting scholars. I participate in organizations relating to medical libraries, dental history and anesthesia history and appreciate the benefits of the collegiality and knowledge received at those meetings.

I am currently in my eighth year of chairing (or co-chairing) the Professional Development Committee of the Health Sciences Library Network of Kansas City (HSLNKC). I've previously served on the Publication Award Committee, the Program Committee, and chaired the Nominating Committee for the the Archivists and Librarians in the History of the Health Sciences. Since 2014 when the committee was created, I have continually served as the KUMC Building Advisory Committee Member for the first floor Robinson. Annually we host an Open House for KUMC Alumni Weekend. The Open House includes refreshments along with exhibits and tours of the library, museum, and archive collections facilitated by our Museum Curator, Jamie Rees, our KUMC Head Archivist, Alex Welborn, and me. During Alumni weekend, Jamie, Alex, and I also spend time with our visiting Alumni going over yearbooks and hearing interesting stories and sometimes even songs from their time at KUMC. I enjoy working with outside groups endeavoring to make the history of medicine interesting as a subject and relevant to their mission.

After collaborating with A.R. Dykes Library in their journal deaccession, we began reviewing their books. For all of 2015 I coordinated the selection of Dykes books for transfer back to the Clendening and then organized the cleaning, moving, and interfiling of 4000 plus volumes. Our next major project may be updating some equipment that keeps our library protected.
