Overview
Dr. Robert Daugherty has devoted his entire career to building programs in medical education. He retired as the Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of South Florida in Tampa and served for 20 years as the Dean at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
While Dr. Daugherty was Dean in Nevada, he led the building of a statewide educational, research and clinical enterprise. Dr. Daugherty was recruited to Nevada in 1981, several years after the school transitioned from a two-year to a four-year program. He recruited nationally renowned clinical and basic sciences chairs, developed a clinical campus in southern Nevada, managed hospital relations with public, private and VA hospital affiliates, built strong rural outreach programs, and oversaw the development of residency programs statewide.
After retiring from Nevada, Dr. Daugherty was recruited to become Dean of the College of Medicine and Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of South Florida, where he oversaw three colleges--medicine, nursing and public health--as well as the university's relationships with several major affiliated hospitals. He retired again in 2004.
In 2004, Dr. Daugherty and several dean colleagues founded DJW Associates, a national consulting firm specializing in accreditation, development of new medical schools, and organizational change in academic medicine.
Dr. Daugherty is well known for his roles in shaping national issues relevant to medical education. He served as chairman of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), where he spearheaded its leadership development program to prepare academicians to become deans. He was also on the AAMC's Advisory Panel on the Mission and Organization of Medical Schools.
Dr. Daugherty served three elected terms on the American Medical Association's Council on Medical Education, which he chaired in 1998-99. He served as an AMA representative on the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), which he chaired for two years, and as the AMA representative to the board of the National Board of Medical Examiners. In 2002, he served on the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Introducing Behavioral and Social Sciences into Medical School Curricula.
With his faculty from Nevada and Florida, Dr. Daugherty was active in international efforts to set standards for the quality of medical education and to establish the Council of Rectors for the Central Asian Republics. Their work was funded by the American International Health Alliance through the US Agency for International Development.
Dr. Daugherty is a 1965 University of Kansas alum, with an undergraduate major in chemistry; he was graduated from the medical school in 1960. He and his (deceased) wife, Sandra, were honored as the 2004 KU Medical School Alumni of the year.
