Letter from the Residency Director
Welcome to the University of Kansas School of Medicine’s Family Medicine Residency Program at Olathe Health!
We are a community-based program located at Olathe Health, which is part of The University of Kansas Health System. Our program’s primary training site is Olathe Medical Center, which has been meeting the growing health and wellness needs of the people in Olathe and the surrounding region for more than 70 years..
OUR MISSION:
To instruct and mentor family medicine specialists in the provision of quality and comprehensive health care to patients and the community, while promoting lifelong learning, professional growth and personal well-being.
OUR GOALS AND AIMS:
- Our interprofessional approach will allow residents to work as part of a team, with a wide variety of health care professionals. These professionals include nurses, social workers, care coordinators and pharmacists to support the needs of patients.
- We focus on the social determinants of health and health care disparities impacting patients, recognizing that successfully caring for a patient depends on caring for the whole individual.
- Our residents will be challenged to integrate the science of medicine with the tools of listening, understanding and empathy, caring for patients with compassion.
- We promote a culture that supports intellectual curiosity, while providing care based on evidenced-based medicine.
- We leverage technology to measure, assess and facilitate improvement, which can extend from individual patient care to our community's health more broadly.
- We promote a culture that fosters physician self-care and well-being.
Our Family Medicine Residency Program is proud to be a part of a strong community of family physicians. Our program is based at the Olathe Health Family Medicine-Blackfoot Clinic, which is one of 12 clinics in The University of Kansas Health System’s Southwest Kansas City region. These clinics have over 35 family physicians working together to identify community needs and develop processes to support these needs.
We are progressive in value-based care. The clinic’s progress is visible through recognition in the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s Patient Centered Medical Home program. The clinic has also participated in the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus initiative and the Primary Care First initiative. The latter is based on the principles of prioritizing the clinician-patient relationship, enhancing care for patients with complex chronic needs and focusing financial incentives on improved health outcomes.
Our residency program has the dedicated support of a broad spectrum of specialists. The long-standing close relationship between our family physicians and specialists in our community is beneficial to the clinic’s patients. This same relationship allows for a broad spectrum of training for our residents.
We are excited to offer leadership development opportunities for residents. Dr. Feehan has a strong belief that leadership is an action, and that each of us are leaders. His extensive experience in professional leadership, includes serving as medical staff president and president of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians and sitting on the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Member and Member Services. Dr. Feehan is excited to support residents in their own leadership development.
Our residents will gain experience in research. Dr. Herrick, the associate program director, has a training background that includes completing the prestigious Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Iowa, which has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1977. Dr. Herrick is excited about the opportunity to support family medicine research as a part of the residency experience.
Wellness and well-being is at the core of our program. Dr. Feehan is a long-standing advocate for physician well-being. During his time as the president of the KAFP, he supported development of education for Kansas Family Physicians in wellness and well-being. This work continued through physician community support activities during the Covid pandemic, and he currently serves as a well-being lead in The University of Kansas Health System’s Physician and Provider Well-Being Task Force. We see physician wellness and well-being as important not only for the physician but also for the provision of quality care to patients.
We are excited to welcome the inaugural class of family medicine residents to Olathe!
Sincerely,
John Feehan, M.D., FAAFP
