The University of Kansas Family Medicine Residency is part of a renowned academic medical center. Our location, in the urban center of a rural state, provides opportunities to learn and practice with professionals grounded in community medicine and work with researchers respected in their fields.

At the University of Kansas Hospital, where our residents train, the contributions of family physicians are valued—so much so that the hospital includes a floor dedicated to family medicine. There, our residents work with unit nurses committed to being on the family medicine team.

Residents benefit from the depth and breadth of our program as well as its faculty and training sites. Such variety allows you to focus your training to prepare you for the path that best suits your future goals.

Our residency accomplishes our aim and mission through a multiprong approach:

Intellectually Rigorous Learning

• Gain encouragement and coaching from our passionate Family Medicine faculty. Residents are challenged to be intellectually curious while being supported to make medical decisions supported by evidence and current guidelines.
• Discover our faculty's wide range of interests, from community-based participatory research to medical student education to inpatient medicine to obstetrics to point-of-care ultrasound and much more.
• Interact with a variety of Family Medicine faculty and invited guest speakers during Wednesday afternoon didactics.
• Lead the weekly clinical case report on interesting and/or complex cases that is a combined event for faculty and residents.
• Teach other learners. Residents are teachers at our institution. You'll be working with medical students as a PGY-2 and 3. Residents have opportunities to perfect their own teaching/precepting skills, even completing a Residents as Teachers course.

Interprofessional Mindset

• Team up with multiple healthcare professionals, including nurses, social workers, behaviorists, pharmacists and community health workers on patient care in the hospital and in our continuity clinic.  
• Work in an Integrated Behavioral Health Model in our outpatient clinic. With our clinical psychologists and social worker, we address our patients' mental health and focus on the social determinants of health and healthcare disparities affecting our patients.

Community-Minded Engagement

• Provide prenatal care and women’s health through our MOM Clinic at Vibrant Health, an FQHC serving our community right in our own backyard. We also deliver these pregnant patients at our hospital. 
• Learn about HIV care through a partnership with Vivent Health, a medical home for patients living with HIV. We have an HIV in Primary Care Longitudinal Program that interested residents can join to become experts in caring for patients with HIV.
• Adolescent health care at a high school-based clinic, Bulldoc.
• Complete school sports physicals at back-to-school events and at local schools throughout the school year.

This is only a glimpse of what our residency program offers. We are committed to providing the best educational experience possible for our residents to help them achieve their future goals in the broad specialty of Family Medicine.

Our residency program is an exciting place to work. We utilize the resources of our multi-specialty university hospital, a local VA hospital, the local children's hospital and community resources to train residents in all aspects of family medicine. We have a passion for the community we serve and the development of a workforce that supports that community. 

We will be accepting outside rotators for interested fourth-year medical students for next academic year. The application will be via VSLO through AAMC.
