HIV in Primary Care Longitudinal Program
A two-year, longitudinal training program for KU Family Medicine Residents who are passionate about providing care for people living with HIV.
About the Program
Mission:
To train the next generation of primary care providers who are knowledgeable about HIV in order to expand access to quality care in our community and help end the HIV epidemic.
Vision:
Every person living with HIV deserves access to high quality, evidence-based, compassionate, patient-centered care.
Program objectives:
- Gain proficiency in HIV topics including screening and diagnosis, antiretroviral therapy, HIV lab monitoring, HIV clinical manifestations, HIV primary care, opportunistic infections, prevention of HIV, and management for special populations. Residents will also have the opportunity to learn gender affirming care and Hepatitis C treatment.
- Create structured learning through didactics, case-based learning, conference attendance, an HIV elective and a research project.
- Provide opportunity for residents to work in the community and address health disparities through their clinical work.
- Develop leaders who are knowledgeable advocates for people living with HIV and help expand access to care after completion of their training.
Program components:
- 2-year program starting at beginning of PGY2 year
- One-half day per week of continuity clinic at Vivent Health and KC CARE
- Minimum of 1 HIV elective rotation
- Case-based learning dinners every 2 months
- CORE didactic presentation (2 total)
- HIV ECHO virtual educational sessions hosted by SHOW-ME ECHO
- HIV conference (1-2 total during program)
- Quality improvement/research project
- Meetings with Dr. Rotert every 3-6 months
- Encouragement to obtain AAHIVS certification after completion of program

Eligibility and application information:
The program is open to current Family Medicine residents, who can apply to participate during their first residency year. Successful applicants will be part of the program for their second and third years.
