bmitrisin@kumc.eduProfessional Background
I was born and raised in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University. My undergraduate experience working in a swine reproductive lab ignited my passion for research. To further advance my career, I pursued a master’s degree in Animal and Veterinary Science at the University of Wyoming. My thesis focused on developing a platform to generate embryos from bovine embryonic stem cells, which introduced me to cattle IVF and deepened my interest in reproductive technologies.
Inspired by my fascination with IVF and my mother’s cancer diagnosis, I joined Dr. Stefan Bossmann’s lab at the University of Kansas Medical Center, renowned for its groundbreaking work in collaborative nanoresearch. My current research leverages ultrasensitive fluorescent nanobiosensors for the early detection of ovarian cancer, endometriosis, and polycystic ovarian syndrome—diseases that significantly impact survival, fertility, and quality of life. Through this work, I aim to contribute to the development of reliable early detection methods, offering hope for better outcomes and improved patient care.
Outside the lab, I volunteer with KC Pet Project and enjoy arts and crafts, puzzles, and spending quality time with my family and my dog. Being outdoors, hiking, and soaking up the sun rejuvenates my spirit and reminds me of the beauty of life
