Professional Background

My interests include studying the oral microbiome and its effects on the progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). HNSCC is the most common malignancy of the head and neck and is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. The relationship between the oral microbiome and the progression of HNSCC is vastly understudied. The risk factors for HNSCC include alcohol and tobacco consumption, environmental pollutants, and infection with viral agents, all of which alter the composition of the oral microbiome. With my research, I hope to increase the understanding of the relationship between the oral microbiome and HNSCC, while providing therapeutic alternatives to combat the dysbiosis observed in HNSCC.
