Class of 2029

Jonathan Baumstark, M.D.

Hometown: Columbia, MO
Medical School: University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix
Why KU: I chose KU Anesthesiology for the wealth of opportunities to learn and train alongside faculty with a broad range of academic and clinical expertise. Ultimately, I was drawn to the program’s strong anesthetic case diversity of both general and subspecialty experiences at a high-acuity tertiary care center.  Throughout my conversations with residents and faculty, I immediately sensed the program’s supportive and welcoming culture. Additionally, I recognized Kansas City as a vibrant, family-friendly community with an abundance of recreational opportunities for my spouse and children.

Madisen Boskind, M.D.

Hometown: Sequim, WA
Medical School: Loma Linda University School of Medicine
Why KU:  Someone once told me, “You’ll know where you want to train after five minutes in their OR.” Five minutes at KU showed me everything I needed to see—collaborative, kind, and highly skilled people who love what they do. Beyond strong case complexity, KU offers a culture of mutual respect, excellent mentorship, and resident camaraderie. It’s a place where people genuinely care about each other and their patients. I’m very proud to be a resident at KUMC. We hope to see you here!

Rachel Dukes, M.D.

Hometown: Overland Park, KS
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine
Why KU: Though I am a Kanas City native, I kept a very open mind when approaching the Match process. I was looking for a program that would check all of the educational boxes (complex cases, diverse patient population, emphasis on didactics, research opportunities) but also had a strong sense of culture and truly valued each resident as an individual. The program here at KU was simply wonderful from top to bottom and checked each of those boxes. The wonderful group of residents and the strong sense of community I felt both when rotating and on interview day really sealed the deal. Moreover I love Kansas City. I am beyond grateful to stay here to practice medicine. Rock Chalk!

Lucas Georger, M.D.

Hometown: Platte City, MO
Medical School: University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine
Why KU:  I chose KU because of the people. I rotated here as an away student and immediately felt that they were invested in helping me become a safe and competent anesthesiologist, no matter where I ultimately ended up. Months later, I also had the unique perspective of experiencing KU from a patient’s family point of view. I can confidently say that every staff member I interacted with-physicians, nurses, techs, admin, therapists, social work, housekeeping, food service, etc-went above and beyond to make sure my family and I felt supported, despite the awful situation. When it came time to submit my rank list, it was a no-brainer that KU was #1.

Jared Hueser, M.D.

Hometown: Elk Point, SD
Medical School: University of South Dakota, Sanford School of Medicine
Why KU:  I chose KU Med because of the great clinical training, supportive environment, and the excellent culture within the program. When I rotated here as a visiting student, I immediately felt the strong sense of community and camaraderie among the residents. Everyone was welcoming, and the faculty clearly cared about my education and success. It really felt like a place where I could grow and be supported during my training. Plus, Kansas City is an awesome place to live – with plenty to do, great food, and a sports scene that’s hard to beat.

Jack Kovarik, M.D.

Hometown: Prairie Village, KS
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita
Why KU: I chose KU for residency because of the excellent clinical training opportunities, strong program culture, and location. I wanted to be at a program where I knew residents have early exposure to sub-specialty rotations and feel well-trained at the end of residency to care for patients across all acuity levels and care settings. During my rotation with the program it was clear from my interactions with the residents, faculty, and support staff that everyone is on the same wavelength in upholding a strong team culture across the program, and I felt like I fit in really well. Kansas City is the perfect mix of being convenient and affordable, while still having plenty of things to do!

Kevin Ngo, M.D.

Hometown: Oklahoma City, OK
Medical School: University of Oklahoma College of Medicine
Why KU: I was drawn to KU because it's a highly resident-centric program focused on our learning and wellbeing. I feel like they genuinely care about their residents here. The diversity of clinical experiences combined with outstanding faculty who have a true passion for education and mentorship allows for an enriching and enjoyable learning experience. In terms of the intangibles, there is a strong sense of community within KU Anesthesiology as well as a healthy work culture even outside the department. Also, Kansas City is a nice, affordable place to live that has a lot to offer, from sports and city life to nice parks, cool art, and good eats!

Morgan Schlee, D.O.

Hometown: West Des Moines, IA
Medical School: Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Why KU: I chose KU because of the strong clinical training and the down-to-earth, supportive culture I experienced during my interactions with the program. The educators were approachable, engaged, and clearly invested in teaching, which made a lasting impression. I appreciated the balance of high expectations with a healthy, team-based environment. It felt like a place where I would build solid clinical skills, grow with the support of good mentors, and be surrounded by people who care – not just about the medicine, but about each other as well!

Ghausia Shah, M.D.

Hometown: Frisco, TX
Medical School: University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine
Why KU:  I chose KU because of my experiences with KU trained anesthesiologists at various hospitals during my clinical rotations. I was consistently impressed by their depth of knowledge and their genuine commitment to both patient care and medical education. KU Anesthesiology cultivates an environment that blends a passion for teaching, a culture of compassionate care, and a standard of clinical excellence that is truly rare. What also spoke to me most was the program leadership's dedication to resident wellness and emotional intelligence. They understand that thriving in residency goes beyond clinical performance, it's also about supporting residents as individuals and lifelong learners. The residents I met all spoke about their training with pride and gratitude, and their camaraderie was authentic. I knew without a doubt that KU was the right place for me to become the anesthesiologist I aspire to be.

Karishma Shah, M.D.

Hometown: Overland Park, KS
Medical School: University of Kansas School of Medicine
Why KU: While rotating with The University of Kansas Medical Center, I came to appreciate the varied caseload and robust emphasis on didactic teaching. However, I was most interested in furthering my education at KUMC because of the community between the resident physicians. They welcome teachable moments, offer hands-on learning, and share a profound sense of camaraderie. I am proud to now be a part of this spectacular resident culture. As a lifelong Jayhawk, I am elated to continue my training at KU—an institution dedicated to excellent clinical care!
