Daniel Elliott, M.D., Ph.D.

Professional Background

I grew up in the countryside just outside of Topeka Kansas. Wanting a change of scenery for college I moved to Provo, Utah to attend BYU nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountain Range. After taking a two-year deferment for a mission trip to Uruguay (donde aprendi a hablar español e falar um puoco portugues!), I graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Neuroscience and a Chemistry minor. During my time at BYU, I worked in Dr. Alonzo Cook's chemical engineering lab studying tissue decellularization and helped form a sub-project focusing on peripheral nerve regeneration in the rat animal model.

I completed my Ph.D. research in Dr. Wright's Sensory Neuron Disorder Laboratory studying the role of sensory neurons innervating the pancreas on insulin homeostasis. I also studied mouse models of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy as well as managed a clinical study in prediabetic patients with and without neuropathy. I will be staring a general surgery preliminary year at Johns Hopkins University; my wife and I couples matched to Baltimore and she will be in the combined Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics residency program at the University of Maryland Medical Center. My current goal is to continue into Diagnostic/Interventional Radiology training.

For prospective students, I highly recommend the MD/PhD training program at the University of Kansas. It is well supported by the university administration and features the kindest and most down-to-earth leadership of perhaps any program of its kind. Dr. Fields and Dr. Rongish do nothing but support, encourage, and assist trainees on accomplishing their predoctoral research and clinical goals. The program has an amazing track record of matching graduates into the residency programs of their choice!
