Congratulations on considering the University of Kansas School of Medicine. To make sure your enrollment is the right fit, you need to meet key criteria and leverage your experiences for an increased chance at being accepted.

Required criteria

A bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) is required, including the following minimum course requirements:

Courses taken to meet the biology and chemistry prerequisites must be courses required of science majors and equivalent to one academic year. Modern physics courses must be based on mathematics of at least the level of college algebra and trigonometry and equivalent to one academic year.

Strongly encouraged coursework

In addition to a CHEA-accredited bachelor's degree, we look for applicants who possess a diversified undergraduate education and prior experience in medical and healthcare shadowing, volunteer work and/or employment.

We encourage applicants to diversify their undergraduate education. While not required for admission to the School of Medicine, we consider these courses and subjects helpful in preparing for the medical school curriculum:

• Immunology (strongly encouraged)
• Biochemistry (strongly encouraged) (major section of MCAT)
• Anatomy & Physiology (strongly encouraged)
• Genetics
• Physiology
• Microbiology
• Natural Sciences
• Behavioral and Social Sciences
• Humanities
• Oral and Written communications
• Social determinants of health (strongly encouraged) (cultural or social anthropology, public or population health, epidemiology, environmental health, health economics, health policy, history of medicine or public health, ethics related to health care)

Healthcare experiences

Applicants must possess health care experience, either through job shadowing, volunteer work or employment. A specific number of hours is not required, but these experiences should lead you to an understanding of how to work with patients and serve them as a physician.

Pass/Fail Grading and Online Policy for 2025 Application Cycle

The School of Medicine does accept Pass/Fail and Credit/No Credit grades for course prerequisites, but prefers to see letter grades. Students with the option of accepting a letter grade or a Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit grade in the 2025 application cycle may want to consider the impact on the overall science GPA and cumulative GPA if a course does not have a letter grade.

Online Coursework and Labs - Online coursework and labs are acceptable.

Letters of Evaluation - We do not specifically require a school committee letter. If your school is unable to provide one, please submit 3 to 5 letters of reference instead.
