My first exposure to research came as an undergraduate at Kanas State University working in an exercise physiology laboratory. This is where I began to understand the powerful connection between academic research and clinical medicine. Following undergraduate training, I joined the MD/PhD program at the University of Kansas Medical Center. This time included graduate work in Dr. Gustavo Blanco's laboratory which led to my dissertation defining the role of an endogenous hormone in mechanisms of cyst growth in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. After completing medical school, I joined the Internal Medicine residency program at KUMC and was also selected to serve an additional year as a Chief Resident with the program. I then joined the Nephrology fellowship program at KUMC, and currently I am completing my final year of a research track fellowship. This time has allowed me protected research time in Dr. Jason Stubb's laboratory where we study mineral metabolism in models of chronic kidney disease. At the completion of my fellowship, I am planning to join the Nephrology division at KUMC as a junior faculty member where I will continue to develop an independent research track as well as practice clinical nephrology.
