Karra Jones, MD, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Neuropathologist at Duke University School of Medicine.  She received her M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas School of Medicine where she examined peripheral nerve innervation of muscle spindles in the setting of diabetic neuropathy in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology with Dr. Doug Wright.  At KUMC she was inspired to pursue a clinical career in Neuropathology by Dr. Kathy Newell.  She then completed her Anatomic Pathology residency and Neuropathology fellowship at the University of California, San Diego where she subsequently practiced diagnostic neuropathology, led the neuromuscular pathology service, and assisted in biorepository and biomarker laboratory efforts.  Dr. Jones then expanded her expertise in neurosurgical, neuromuscular, and autopsy neuropathology from 2016-2022 at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine where she received multiple teaching awards.  In 2022, Dr. Jones moved to North Carolina to join the Neuropathology Division at Duke University where she was appointed Section Head for Muscle & Nerve Pathology and Program Director for the Neuropathology Fellowship program.  She is currently practicing neurosurgical, neuromuscular, and autopsy neuropathology clinically.  She loves teaching trainees of all levels and is thrilled to have a significant role in training the next generation of neuropathologists.  Her research is increasingly focused on neuromuscular diseases with an interest in inherited muscular dystrophies and myopathies, and she is a member of the Astellas Gene Therapies (formerly Audentes Therapeutics) Muscle Biopsy Review Committee.  Dr. Jones is active in the American Association of Neuropathologists as the current Chair of the Education Committee and Assistant Secretary-Treasurer for the organization.  She is also a member of the College of American Pathologists Neuropathology Committee.
