My love for research and desire to become a physician scientist developed while I was an undergraduate student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where I studied in a molecular biology/biochemistry laboratory designing fluorescent protein biosensors to detect intracellular signaling pathways. I then entered KUMC's MD/PhD program in 2005. In the graduate phase of the program, I studied cellular bioenergetics and mitochondrial metabolism in models of neurodegeneration under the guidance of Dr. Peter Smith & Dr. Russell Swerdlow. As a third year medical student, I rotated on the inpatient oncology service, and found my calling in treating patients suffering from cancer. I went on to complete residency in Internal Medicine & fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University as part of the physician scientist pathway. During this time, I worked under the mentorship of Dr. Zhenghe (John) Wang to develop novel targets to exploit glutamine addiction in PIK3CA-mutated colorectal cancer. I continue to work closely with Dr. Wang as I build my own laboratory as junior faculty studying colorectal cancer metabolism and tumor microenvironment, running early-phase clinical trials to deliver new therapies to patients with GI malignancies, and seeing patients with gastrointestinal malignancies in my medical oncology clinic.
