I grew up in Montana and graduated from Montana State University- Billings. During undergrad I became involved in research and really enjoyed the process of testing hypothesis and analyzing results. After graduating, I moved to Boston to work in Adam Bass's lab at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute where we first identified and characterized the genomic landscape of esophageal adenocarcinomas. We used next generation sequencing and SNP arrays to profile a large number of tumors and identified some key drug-able alterations within the tumor type. While working in the lab, I was also able to shadow physicians and see the real life impact of personalized medicine on patients. This bench to bedside type of research lead to become interested in pursuing an MD/PhD.
I picked KU because the supportive environment and excellent research opportunities. Also spending time in Kansas City during the interview weekend showed me how amazing the city was and that it would be an excellent place to train. I really enjoyed my time at KU and KC but had to made the difficult choice to leave for residency but will always be looking for opportunities to return.
