Message from the Dean
This summer has seen transformative changes on all three of our KU School of Medicine campuses.
We just welcomed our new M2s back to start the second year of the School of Medicine’s new ACE curriculum, and our new M1s had their White Coat Ceremony on July 27. At our Salina campus, the new M1s joined the M2s in the newly renovated Health Education Center. This beautiful new building houses both our Salina KU School of Medicine students and the KU School of Nursing Salina students. The center is a state-of-the-art education hub that will support interprofessional health education in north central Kansas (be sure to check out photos of the new Salina building in this issue of KU Medicine.)
Along with the expansion of facilities in Wichita in 2010 and the Health Education Building in Kansas City, our students have never been educated in more up-to-date facilities in the history of the school. The next piece of the puzzle is to update the anatomy facilities on our Kansas City campus, which have remain unchanged since I started attending medical school here in 1982. You’ll hear more about that in the near future.
In other news, the search for a new executive dean for the KU School of Medicine is well underway. We are blessed to have Drs. Tracie Collins and Alex Chiu leading a diverse search committee. Screening and initial interviews have been completed and campus visits are underway. It takes a village to find a dean, and I am confident that the process will be successful.
We are also in the midst of completing our strategic planning process for the University of Kansas Medical Center and the KU School of Medicine. In doing so, I am reminded of the broad impact the school has across the state and the nation and the responsibility we have in directing it. Our mission to improve lives and communities in Kansas and beyond through innovation in education, research and health care could not be achieved without support of our alumni, faculty, staff and the citizens of Kansas. And for that we remain grateful.
Robert D. Simari, M.D.
Executive Dean, KU School of Medicine
Interim Executive Vice Chancellor, KU Medical Center
