Dr. Meyer, Alice M. Patterson, M.D. and Harold L. Patterson, M.D. professor in family medicine, is a lifelong Kansan, earning his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University before completing medical school and residency in family medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Following completion of his residency in 1992, Dr. Meyer joined the KU faculty in the department of family medicine and quickly earned the respect of his colleagues, trainees and patients.
Over the course of his career, he has served as medical director for student health services, residency director in family medicine, founding director of the Mahlon Delp Academic Society, executive director of the medical alumni societies, and has served as associate dean for student affairs since 2000 and acting associate dean for the office of diversity and inclusion since 2012. He was named senior associate dean for student affairs in 2018.
Dr. Meyer has received multiple awards recognizing his outstanding teaching and professionalism, including the KU Medical Alumni Association Early Career Achievement Award in 2004, the Nason Family Award for Excellence in Family Medicine Education in 2007, the Rainbow Award in 2009, and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018. Dr. Meyer’s dedication to the medical profession and community is demonstrated by his leadership roles in the KU Medical Alumni Association Board of Directors, the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools Board of Directors, Kansas Medical Society, Johnson/Wyandotte County Medical Society, and the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, in addition to his ongoing work volunteering at the JayDoc Clinic and serving on its board of trustees.
