Overview of KU Physical Therapy Clinical Education

KU's doctorate in physical therapy clinical education program provides students with the opportunity to translate essential physical therapy knowledge and skills into the clinical environment through a combination of integrated clinical experiences, clinical simulations, and full-time clinical rotations.

Beginning in the fall semester of the program's first year and extending through the first two years of the curriculum, students complete weekly integrated clinical experiences at local partnering facilities. These integrated clinical experiences are specifically designed to develop the professional and communication skills that serve as the foundation of physical therapy practice. They also provide students with opportunities to immediately translate the concepts and skills learned in the classroom to a variety of practice settings and patient populations.

In addition to these integrated clinical experiences, students complete a series of simulations to develop clinical reasoning and interprofessional skills in authentic practice scenarios and settings though KU Medical Center’s state-of-the-art Health Education Building and experiential learning programs.

During the final academic year, students complete a total of 36 weeks of full-time clinical experiences offered at more than 250 sites throughout the United States and abroad.

Two experiences, one in an inpatient setting and one in a general or orthopedic outpatient setting, are required. While some full-time clinical rotations offer specialized experiences that extend beyond entry level, broad exposure to geographically representative practice throughout the lifespan is the priority in these assignments.
