Service is an essential part of our mission. In our local community and across the state of Kansas, our students and faculty participate in outreach and service activities focused on improving health care and expanding educational opportunities far beyond our campus.
Because we firmly believe that we have a duty to serve the Kansas City area, the state of Kansas and the underserved communities beyond our borders, many of our programs include an outreach component.
In this win-win situation, students are able to practice what they've learned in the classroom while individuals in need of care get the help they require.
Examples of our students and faculty giving back to their community are as wide-ranging as they are meaningful:
- The Underserved Communities Have a Medical Provider (U-CHaMP) program provides students a chance to earn a substantial scholarship toward a bachelor's degree. This is an immersive health profession education experience with the goal of improving diversity of the health care workforce and closing the health disparity gap in underserved communities. - While pursuing her master’s degree in health care management, Amany Abusalim delivered groceries to home-bound individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. "It made me realize that even if it was something as small as delivering groceries, I can make a difference. If I could reduce one person's risk, I was going to do it." Read her story.
- Dana Baker, MBA, M.S., clinical assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, was featured on the TODAY Show's special broadcast for International Women's day. Baker participated in a virtual panel discussion about how the pandemic is affecting female workers and what happens next.
- At the start of each academic year, School of Health Professions students team up with peers from the schools of Medicine and Nursing for day of service in our local community, with activities including painting and cleaning up areas of the neighborhood and working in the community gardens.
