Brian Dolan, MHSA
Director of Health Systems Supply Chain
The University of Kansas Hospital
Class of 2006, Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management and Masters of Health Services Administration
Hometown: Wilmington, Delaware
As director of a supply chain, Brian manages multiple operational departments, from contracting and operational management to quality and process improvement.
How does he manage so many areas? He has the right attitude.
“I don’t believe any job is too small. When you are seeking ways to improve quality, one way is to appreciate how others do their jobs. I’ve experienced all levels of various roles, even cleaning hospital rooms,” says Brian. “No job is beneath me.”
He also recommends that future health information management students adopt a similar mentality.
“I think gaining broad experience and a willingness to take on new opportunities will help anyone’s career,” he says. “KU’s HIM program will give you a sound foundation to hit the road with, but it’s your choice how far down the road you’ll go.”
Brian also credits the small HIM classes and the interdisciplinary education as very valuable to his career. Without the personal attention received from such a small program, he doesn’t believe he would be where he is today.
What other advice does he offer to potential HIM students?
“Look up alumni,” he says. “Reach out to them to really understand what they do. This is such a niche field.”
