Kelly Clodfelter, RHIA, CRC
Class of 2015, Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management
Hometown: Olathe, Kansas
Before Kelly entered KU’s Health Information Management program, she worked as a medical coder. Pursuing an HIM degree was the best way for Kelly to advance her career.
“When I started the HIM program, I had some preparation because I knew a lot of different code sets from my experience in medical coding,” she says, “but my education helped me understand more about the different codes and how they fit into the data.”
For Kelly, the chance to learn more about health information management beyond coding was a welcome opportunity.
“I think there is a misinterpretation of HIM that it is only coding, but you learn databases, health care quality and the many aspects of HIM that cover how hospitals get paid, documentation, legal guidelines and compliance, administration and management,” she says. “HIM is a very diverse field.”
Kelly was offered a job at Cerner Corporation shortly before graduation. Her education offered her a substantial pay increase, but also the opportunity to guide and share her knowledge with other coders.
Today, Kelly works as a Solutions Designer specializing in revenue cycle management. Her role involves mapping different code sets and nomenclatures for revenue cycles.
“I feel like my experience at KU gave me the chance to be an asset to my coworkers and team at Cerner, and that’s a great feeling!”
