Faculty Onboarding: As you prepare to arrive

Welcome to the School of Health Professions Faculty!

Your onboarding success is very important. One of your first endeavors should be to review this information and seek answers to any questions that may arise. Keep in mind there is a separate onboarding process for employees of The University of Kansas Health System.

Pages in the main menu summarize onboarding processes that apply to all School of Health Professions faculty. There may be additional processes for onboarding in your department. Your department administrator will assist you throughout the onboarding process. You may also contact the school's associate dean for academic affairs with any questions.

We also have included some longer-term information that will be more pertinent as you progress further in your academic career. We believe this will provide a more comprehensive perspective on progressing through faculty ranks, achieving tenure, and options open to you as a senior faculty member.

Prior to or as you arrive on campus

  • Provide your department’s administrator with a current copy of your curriculum vitae if you have not already done so.

  • After receiving your email account, log into Workday to review your profile, compensation, and how to request paid time off. Learning about Workday is self guided using "job aids" found in myKUMC. Start with the job aid "HCM Core_Onboarding in Workday for New Hires." Reach out to your department's administrative staff with questions.
  • Visit the School of Health Professions Office of the Dean and introduce yourself!

  • Visit the Divison of Human Resources for information about salary, benefits, and pension plans from the university. The office processes all payroll and associated paperwork for university employees.

  • Become familiar with the KU Medical Center faculty handbook.

  • Take time to review the bylaws for the School of Health Professions.

  • Identify a faculty member who can facilitate acclimitization to your new role and/or serve as a mentor. See: faculty mentoring program

Office of Academic Affairs – With a goal of supporting the academic mission of the university, this office serves graduate students, postdocs, faculty, other staff members, and an international population by supporting their varied academic and research pursuits.

Office of Faculty Affairs – With a mission of creating a seamless faculty lifecycle experience, this office aims to improve the faculty experience through efficient, effective communication and technology, and professional training opportunities.

Credentialing and licensing

  • Contact your department’s administrator for guidance in navigating the credentialling process as soon as possible.

  • You should apply for a Kansas and/or Missouri professional practice license as soon as possible so the approval process is not delayed. Check with your department chair and/or administrator to determine the license(s) appropriate for your role.

If you are transferring grants, equipment, or an existing research lab or project, you will need to work with your department and administrator immediately upon accepting your faculty appointment.

It is highly recommended to seek guidance from the associate dean for research as you first consider developing a grant proposal. Their expertise will save you time and effort in guiding you through the grant development and submission process, and help you avoid common pitfalls along the way. 

Consider initiating contact with the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc. four to six months prior to your initial day of employment. Contact them again once you have arrived, too.

Meet with the school's associate dean for research as needed to to discuss research opportunities.

Once you have obtained your KU Medical Center network username and password, explore the Office of Compliance.

Identify training programs necessary for your research or practice. Note these pages provide general information only. The training modules, forms, and detailed instructions are located in the myKUMC intranet and require a network username and password to access.

  • Safety training (annual requirement)

  • Human Subjects in Research (Institutional Review Board, Human Subjects Committee, CITI training)

  • Animal Welfare Program (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee)

  • Good Clinical Practice Training
    This resource is in MyKUMC and requires your username and password. Once at this page, helpful information on responsible conduct of research is available in the left sidebar links. It also explains “who” needs to take this training.


The Teaching and Learning Technologies staff will be helpful in guiding you through using the technology available in your classrooms, using the Blackboard education portal, developing and administering computer-based tests, and scheduling room reservations.
