How to Apply

Application Deadlines:
Fall semester entry: February 1
Spring semester entry: September 1

Applications for admission to the PhD program in Medical Nutrition Science are reviewed by the Admissions Committee of the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, with the approval of the Office of Graduate Studies. Qualified students will be admitted without regard to race, color, national or ethnic origin, gender, age or disability.

Before you start the online application

It will be helpful if you have the following information ready before starting the online application:

  1. Arrange to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test. Your application cannot be completely processed until we have received your scores. Use institution code 6895 and department code 0214 to have an official copy of your scores mailed directly to our office.

  2. Transcripts: Arrange to have one official copy of each transcript from every college and university that you have attended sent directly to KU Medical Center. If the institution provides electronic transcripts, please have them sent to Hardcopy transcripts can be mailed to the following address:

  3. References: Applicants will enter the names and contact information (including email addresses) of three (3) individuals into the online application. The system will then prompt each person to submit the reference online.

    A reference provides a professional recommendation on your behalf. It is preferred that college instructors, academic advisors or supervisors provide these recommendations. The recommendations may not be obtained from family members, friends, etc. Make sure each reference is willing to submit this electronically, and inform him or her that they will be receiving an email from “KU Medical Center <>” requesting them to submit a reference for you online.

  4. If English is a second language, applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and arrange for scores to be sent directly to the KU Department of Dietetics and Nutrition. A satisfactory score on the TOEFL must be obtained within the previous two (2) years (see guidelines for TOEFL).
