Yan Zheng, Ph.D., MLS(ASCP)cm, joined the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences in August 2019 as a clinical assistant professor at the KU Medical Center. She teaches undergraduate courses in fundamentals of analytical techniques as well as immunology. She also teaches graduate courses on research methods and clinical correlations. Her other responsibilities include serving as a mentor for undergraduate students and developing curriculum for the doctorate degree program in clinical laboratory sciences.

Zheng's current research is focused on patient safety of the overall diagnostic testing process and patient outcomes regarding lab test utilizations.


Academic Background

In 1993, Zheng received her bachelor's degree in preventive medicine from Beijing Medical University (now Peking University Health Science Center). She worked as a research scientist at the National Institute of Health Education of China from 1993 to 1997.

Zheng received her master's degree and doctorate in toxicology from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, in 2000 and 2004, respectively.


Professional Background

Zheng served as laboratory instructor for the medical laboratory sciences program at Idaho State University's Kasiska School of Health Professions from 2016 to 2019. Prior to working at Idaho State, she was a medical laboratory scientist from 2014 to 2019 in the Department of Laboratory and Pathology at the Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho.

She previously served in positions at Idaho State's College of Pharmacy and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.
